DevCamp 2023: Meadow v1.0, Meadow Cellular, Meadow.Cloud, and More!

Wilderness Labs DevCamp

Meadow is now v1.0

Thanks to everyone who attended DevCamp 2023, either in person or virtually! We enjoyed seeing so many customers and community members. We announced a LOT of innovative product news at DevCamp that we’ve been working on, but one announcement stood above all else.

After 6 years of dedicated development, 3 years of public betas and 1.5MM lines of code, Meadow is now production ready! With the highly anticipated release of Meadow v1.0, you have the ability to deploy IoT applications that are stable, high-performing, and can be updated in the field. Meadow revolutionizes IoT development for over 10MM .NET developers. This production-ready platform unlocks secure, scalable, and cost-efficient solutions, empowering enterprises and mainstream developers to create advanced IoT applications with ease. We’re excited for this milestone and to continue to evolve Meadow to revolutionize the way developers create, deploy, and manage connected devices – opening up a world of endless possibilities for the Internet of Things.

All the awesome things we announced at DevCamp

Here’s a compendium of all the other awesome things we announced:

IoT anywhere with cellular modem drivers

We now offer support for several cellular modems in Meadow. Using them is incredibly straightforward: simply setup a modem config, plug in a modem, and then they work like any other network interface, with full modern .NET network stack support. With cellular support you can now deploy Meadow nearly anywhere in the field!

Push OtA updates with Meadow.Cloud

We’re thrilled to announce that along with Meadow v1.0, Meadow.Cloud is now in private beta! Meadow.Cloud enables Over-the-Air (OtA) updates, push messaging, and more! If you’re interested in giving it a spin, sign-up today to get on the invite list and be one of the first to explore it.

Reduce your dev loop with Meadow.Desktop

Meadow.Desktop significantly reduces the build/debug/deploy loop enabling you to have near-instant debug cycles by running Meadow applications right from your development machine. With a USB hardware IO Expander you can even control hardware as if the app were running on a Meadow device.  Learn more about it and the benefits on our developer site.

Build HMIs the easy way with Avalonia + Meadow

You can now build Meadow apps with Avalonia’s UX platform running on Linux hardware!

We’re working on a getting started guide to get you up and running, but in the meantime, check out the keynote for a preview of it in action!

Quickly design/build PCBs with CCM add-on modules

The CCM Add-on modules massively simplify integrating the Meadow Core-Compute Module into your PCB designs by solving the most common use cases. They’re designed to be super easy to use when assembling PCBs by hand and are 100% open sourced and documented, so when you’re ready to go to production, you can copy their designs right into your solution. In fact, we use these modules in the IoT Accelerators (below) and they massively speed up our design process and simplify assembly.

We launched the following five modules to get you and your CCM designs up and running, with more on the way:

  • USB-C, Power, Boot, Reset – Provides baseline hardware for USB deployment, debugging, and power from USB.
  • Dual Ethernet – Includes a high end, Microchip LAN9355 dual ethernet switch and RJ-45 Ethernet jacks for industrial IoT use cases, enabling you to daisy-chain Meadow solutions together.
  • SD Card – Easily add additional non-volatile storage via an SD card.
  • Solar Power and Battery Charging – Safely and easily connect to a 6V solar panel to charge a batter and provide operating power. Includes all the necessary transient voltage suppression and power management.
  • Debug Headers – Enables low level JTAG and ST-Link hardware programming of the CCM.

All these modules are open-source and are available in our store.

Turnkey solutions for common IoT use cases with IoT Accelerators

Both the Project Lab and Clima got big updates as they moved to be Core-Compute Module (CCM) based and hit v3 milestones, and we also launched two additional accelerators that you can order today.

Project Lab V3

Now on its third major iteration, Project Lab, which massively simplifies IoT prototyping, got some huge upgrades, including a much larger, 2.8” full-color display, piles of new IO, and a CCM-based design. Purchase it today and get it in a limited-edition carbon-fiber 3D printed enclosure.

Clima v3

Everyone’s favorite weather station also got big updates. It now includes a top-shelf NEO-M8 GNSS module so you no longer have to manually configure its location, it’ll already know where it’s at! We also added a high-end SD40 CO2 sensor, so you can track atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

GNSS/GPS Sensor Tracker

Are you looking to build a low-power tracking system with Meadow? Check out the GNSS/GPS Sensor Tracker. This low-power device runs on battery and solar power and includes the same high-precision GNSS module in Clima v3, the NEO-M8, as well as a low-energy e-paper display, integrated accelerometer and environmental sensors, and a LiPo battery with integrated charging.

Juego

At the end of our Keynote, we introduced a new Meadow-powered kit, our very own programmable retro-gaming console, Juego. We built this as a passion project after discovering an open-source 2D frame-loop graphics engine, Glade2D, created from scratch by two very talented game developers on GitHub. Juego will be available in our store later this year.
